Who We Are

SCHOK & AWE: Schikunga Children’s Home of Kenya and Assistance with Eyes

God is at work in the Kenyan village of Shikunga. We chose the acronym SCHOK & AWE because so often that is how we see God at work – in surprising and awesome ways! What Think about the creation of the world; think about 1 million Israelites crossing the Red Sea on dry ground followed immediately by the entire Egyptian army drowned in the Red Sea. Think about the virgin birth of Jesus Christ! The Bible is full of many examples of how God works through shock and awe, and He is at work in Kenya where it is very surprising that North Americans would ever find the small village of Shikunga located 7 hours drive west from Nairobi and 2 hours north of Kisumu in the western part of Kenya.

When Ralph, Matthew, Melissa, & Annaleyza De Haan first visited Shikunga in 2001 they found several small buildings in very poor shape and a church of 150 people that were meeting under a large tree each Sunday morning for worship.

From 2009 to 2015 a church building has been constructed at Shikunga and an orphanage attached to the church has been developed, and opened in 2016. The orphanage structure is adequate to house 16 orphans and their caretakers.
